Mobile phone contracts are steadily moving to a 24-month standard.

@OP: it honestly depends on what you need. I wouldn't consider any of the deals to be particularly attractive, but the best of the bunch (IMHO!) is Orange's £30 p/m – unlimited Internet, unlimited texts and 400 anytime minutes.

Can I just heed a warning to you about Carphone Warehouse so a certain problem doesn't happen to you as it did to me

I had a contract with them and before the last month of your contract you are meant to write to them or ring them to cancel it. I rang up and they offered to keep the account open with 125 texts and 75 minutes for free in case I wanted to return. I already had another phone by now but thought I might as well take them up on the offer. So the guy on the phone said he would add £300 worth of credit that would cover the cost of the 125 texts/75 minutes for 18 months.

However, the moron never added the money. I got debt collectors ringing me and sending me letters saying I owed them money. Countless phone calls to Carphone Warehouse where I was told repeatedly they would add the money. It never appeared. So basically don't take ANY offers they may give to you regarding keeping accounts open. They just cause a lot of hassle. My dad I do believe is currently in the process of putting together a letter to his solicitors to claim some money for the amount of harrasment I've received from debt collectors due to their imcompetence. I wouldn't be surprised if I have a bad credit rating from it as well!

I have the HTC Desire on O2 with the following plan:

    Unlimited Texts
    600 Mins
    Unlimited Internet + WiFi
    £35/month for 24 months.
Never argue with an idiot, he'll drag you down to his level, and beat you with experience.

We have 3 year contracts here, and no phone comparable to the Desire. I have a Nexus One and I can testify that these phones completely rock, and if you bought something else over one of these you shall regret it!
