    Holland is the name given to North and South Holland (Noord-Holland/Zuid-Holland). I used to think this until year 7 or 8

    As Stephen Fry said, "Holland is like calling England 'East Anglia'", however, North and South Holland are provinces, so they're technically both considered seperate regions, much like East Anglia, where East Anglia has Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk (and maybe Cambridge, can't remember).

    Amsterdam is the capital, but Den Haag (The Hague) is where the power is, where the Queen works etc.

    I know way too much about the Netherlands, but it's awesome so it's fine

    How? It's like saying North and South Devon - Holland is the name given to the western reach of the country, Devon is like saying North/West/South/East as a collective name, same applies to Holland which is the name given to the two provinces Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland

    Look up the word contradiction

    Oh my God we've got a strange one boys - I said "of the country", that's not saying Holland... Let me put it in lame man terms (re-written):

    "Holland is the name given to the western reach of the Netherlands."

    If I meant Holland, it would come out like this:

    "Holland is the name given to the western reach of Holland."

    ^ Above makes no sense, which you're suggesting is what I'm trying to say

    Country = The Netherlands
    Western Reach = Holland

    I'm shocked you're so confused

    Because the country is "the Netherlands", since that was established we might as well call it "the country"
