I'd rather not risk salmonella poisoning![]()
Yes... I take raw egg whites daily with whey and it tastes good. Wouldn't fancy the yolk, don't like it much but it wouldn't bother me.
The yolk is the only bit I'd eat raw, considering the extremely high levels of nutrients in it - it's a 'superfood' (I hate that term). The problem with raw egg white is: It's harder to digest when raw, and contains avidin. Avidin is a glycoprotein that binds to the B vitamin biotin which is B7 iirc. This is an anti-nutrient, and isn't the only anti-nutrient in egg whites. Taking raw egg whites with whey is pretty counter-productive. They contain trypsin inhibitors, this stops the enxyme trypsin from doing its job which is digesting protein. They are quite potent, reducing protein digestion by up to 90%.
Cooking eggs doesn't have a major impact on the nutrients in the egg, but if you must eat them raw, and must eat the whites, at least you can be safe in the knowledge that salmonella is virtually non existent in class A lion mark eggs.
Could you link me to a source for this information? As you should know raw/liquid egg whites contain protein so if it has something in it that stops the digestion of protein then why do people eat/drink it?The yolk is the only bit I'd eat raw, considering the extremely high levels of nutrients in it - it's a 'superfood' (I hate that term). And I buy the stuff in bottles, it's salmonella free.
Can't edit, forgot to mention the whites are pasteurised and/or heated - I dug something up on Google and said pasteurisation kills the bacteria/salmonella and it also kills the 'protein digestion inhibitors'
If that is so then they aren't raw. The degree to which the trypsin inhibitors are deactivated depends on the length of the pasteurisation. You're probably ok, I think pasteurised eggs are a waste of money though. Inferior to normal eggs. There are better ways to consume protein if you're on the run (which is the only reason I can imagine someone would buy pasteurised eggs in bottles like http://www.myprotein.co.uk/products/liquid_egg_whites ). The reason people drink eggs raw would be because they saw Rocky doing it, or they think it contains better quality protein than cooked which really isn't true.
I just assumed uncooked meant raw, like raw meat...If that is so then they aren't raw. The degree to which the trypsin inhibitors are deactivated depends on the length of the pasteurisation. Well it's good enough for me, adds protein to the shake and also makes it drinkable as with water it's not too great and I'm not drinking milk. Reason I do it is because they have a decent amount of protein, no fats (although that doesn't matter), no carbs and a low amount of calories compared with other foods. 250ml of egg whites gives me 28g protein and 125 calories. 2 whole eggs (cooked) would give me around 12g protein but 142 calories.
Those you linked to are the exact ones I have. Not much dearer too... £1 eggstra (hehe) than buying the eggs, but without the hassle.
BTW how come they are inferior?
Pasteurising them, in my opinion, destroys more of the nutrients in the yolk than if boiled, poached, scrambled, fried, etc. Not that the difference is huge of course. The main reason I think they would be inferior is if you cook pasteurised eggs, makes them far more nutrient sparse than regular eggs.I just assumed uncooked meant raw, like raw meat...

I also don't see why you are that worried about minor differences in calories, the yolk is far superior to the white anyway. All this ridiculous ******** you hear about people vilifying cholesterol and saturated fat is, frankly wrong and dangerous. The eatwell plate and the food pyramids are all ******** and they have it totally wrong. Cholesterol is good and saturated fat is very good for you. I don't see why you avoid milk, except maybe the carbs. There has been lots of anti-dairy stigma and it either applies to USA dairy or makes frankly ridiculous claims. I certainly think that if you can get milk from traditional breeds of cattle like Jersey, Guernsey etc there is no problem as they produce A2 casein which is the non problematic one.
Yeah, I always eat the mixture![]()
