HP have gone downhill in the past couple of years, Acer have always been terrible. Been using Dell at home and at work for many many years and is the standard in schools around here due to their support, reliability and robustness, they serve 99% of people wonderfully.

I've always had problems with Dell and people I have spoken to in-the-know have always said that they do not recommend Dell notebooks. Their most recommended is Apple/Sony laptops. But obviously a 250/300 budget is too low for both of them. He said for people on a Budget. ADVENT/HP/Acer are best to choose from.

Totally disagree, Sony are just like Apple in terms of computer hardware, overpriced. Advent and Acer are both horrible budget companies who don't know a think about build quality and HP is still on the verge of alright, who knows, they may pull back.

We deal with Dell directly and have never had a problem with them, hence why all our work notebooks, desktops, monitors and servers are Dell, even at home I haven't found a fault with their laptops.

But each to their own I suppose!

You're pretty lucky to not have experienced any problems in my opinion :L

Beeb's IT department refuses to use Dell Computers after having so many problems with them and have opted to use Sony VAIO's or HP Computers, as well as a few Macs. I've known so many people to say that Dell is the reason a lot of people think Windows is crap as they create sub-par computers.

But you're entitled to your opinion

Hp laptops have always been fine for me, ive got an acer netbook now and the build quality is not too bad, but ive had alot of problems with the battery, and sleep mode just doesnt work because of it. Alot of my friends have got dell laptops, and theirs always seems to break, i think the one, one of my friends has currently has been replaced 3 or 4 times due to problems with the hard drive and battery aswell. But its the same with alot of the bigger companies I would say, they're not that great, you just get charged more because of the brand name on the front of it.
So imo, for that kind of money you'd be best looking at an hp.

Hard drives aren't generally made by the laptop manufacturer, so you can't use that as a point against them, they are usually made by Western Digital or Seagate or whatever. I think you'll find the hard drive in an HP laptop is very similar if not the same make/models used in Dells.

And what problems with the battery? It's a known fact every single battery you buy in a laptop nowadays will degrade over time :S

At work we use HP, whether that'd be Desktops, Laptops, Servers. Their support is great, they always follow you up to ensure your problem is fixed. I mean, they ask you to do 'basic' stuff to try and fix something and wonder why they tell you that but it works lol.

My work refuse to use dell after such a bad service and crappy builds

I'd recommend HP If you find a good notebook, let me know as I'm after one.
