They're screwed either way if it's a one way flight.

Yeah, but being stuck out on the cold of space having overshot mars or something would be worse in my opinion.

I could also say the same about you, you're screwed. Why? Because you're dying.

Didn't Dr Who predict man landing on mars by 2030 LMAO

Didn't turn out well for them!

The only thing that would down heart me about that would be not getting to set foot on a planet

But you've still been the human to travel furthest into space

The cost of sending a man to mars and back is very expensive. Sending them one way cuts the price into more than half. Getting them there is very easy, it is coming back that will cost the program much more.

They have proposed to send them to mars to complete their own missions and then every 2 years when the window to launch to mars opens, they will send stocks of supplies, and at the same time the astronauts on the surface will send back materials.

I personally don't think they will use this approach, because there are many more open.

It cuts it be at least 3/4, the weight of rocket fuel alone would offset it, double the weight and most of it wont be lost on lift off.

Yup, that is definitely a factor. Because when they send people to mars they will be sending a fuelled up rocket, with vehicles inside the stages that enable them to live on the surface. They will need a vehicle that will be able to achieve PDI (Powered Decent Ignition) to get them to the surface, quite like the Lunar Module in the Apollo Program. They will also need a rover so that they can move around on the surface and explore, and of course they will need some sort of pod which they can live in.

Inside that pod module they will need the instruments to make it an earth like atmosphere, like they have done with the ISS, so that they can get out of their space suits. It must include a water recovery system which converts human waste back into drinking water.

Along with their own instruments and tools needed to carry out research while they are there. All in all the vehicle will be crammed full. The mission control will launch knowing that there are only 2 available launch windows to mars every year, so with that in mind, they will make sure the astronauts have enough things to survive before the next launch window opens.

So that is one of the reasons they want to do a one way ticket to mars.

If they had to bring them back again, they would have to include more fuel cells and also a service/command module that would orbit Mars until the Ascent engine of the mars landing module ascended to dock with it again.

    Solution:

    1. Send a tonne of hot chicks to Mars.
    2. Many men will want to accompany them.
    3. More people are sent to Mars.
    4. The male and female population reproduce.
    5. The population of Mars increases.

    Success!

Edit: Actually, it would be pretty cool to hear the accent of a Martian (similar to the evolution of British to American accent).
