Default Should parents make you do chores?

    Eh, well...

Today my Dad was yelling at me and stuff because I didn't do the dishes. And it made me think...why should I? I didn't ask to be here, they asked for me to be here. I didn't know what I was letting myself in for being born - they did. Surely it's their duty to make my life as comfortable as possible - considering they wanted me...

So I think it's a bit unfair to expect me to drop everything so I can do the dishes or whatever. Especially when I have better things to do.

    My favourite arguments are:
I didn't ask to be here - you did, so you should be doing it for me
    and
I'm going to be paying for your care home so make my life nice now so I can make yours nice later

But do you think it's fair? Should parents make you do chores, or should they let you get on with your life as it was their choice to become parents.

Lucky for me, my mum likes to do things her way, so I'v never really done chores.

If my mums working or something, I'll cook dinner, clean the kitchen and put the dish washer on.

So it's my choice if I do chores

Yeah, my mum & dad like things done their way, but they still ask me to do them, then yell at me when I get it wrong? :S kinda pointless really lol.

And I would cook but my mum doesn't let me. I put my stuff in the dishwasher and that but they always make me do more than really necessary and that's not fair imo

WOW you are ******* ungrateful. i honestly can't stand that kind of attitude.
+ it's not always a choice to be a parent lol how narrow-minded can you get?
they shouldn't make you, they should expect you to. they looked after you when you need it the most so you should return the favour. i do it because it takes a few minutes and shows my mum that i don't take her for granted.

I do what's necessary but in reality why should I do everything. I keep my room tidy, I do my clothes, dishes ect. But I shouldn't be expected to do the whole families dishes, the whole families clothes or whatever. And okay, it's not always a choice to be a parent but it is in most cases and even if it's not they knew it was a potentiality.

I agree with this. Perhaps they were the ones who decided to bring you into this world and it was also them who have fed, watered, homed and loved you for the last X amount of years. They've also been the ones buying you presents, clothes and many other things which they don't have to do. Doing the dishes or the like isn't really going to hurt anyone and just goes a little way to showing them how much you appreciate them.

To add to the above, whilst you're there why not just do the rest? My sister and brother are like that and I personally find it really ignorant and arrogant of them.

but then in later life I'll be the one paying for their housing & whatever.

I know this thread makes me sound like a lazy ungrateful **** but it annoys me so much when they expect me to drop everything to do something that my brothers could do. - That's the other thing, they always ask ME, not my brothers.

Yes they should. They work, they bring you up so the least you can do for them is do a few things around the house to ease the burden especially when you reach your teens. That being said, turning you into a child slave is obviously wrong.
