when you +rep someone it comes up with a +1 in green, but when you -rep someone it doesn't come up with a -1 in red?

Put it this way, wouldn't you hate it if everyone could see that your post has about 5 -reps? Some people can also be easily influenced by others -repping posts too.

I think it's also nicer to see more positive things around the forum rather than the negativity.

Because "they dont want that kind of negativity on the forum"

I do think it should take away from the green +'s though, but not go below 0

fair enough on it wouldn't be nice ... but that isn't very common someone gets that many -reps on one post, surely?

you say it'd encourage pointless -repping, but doesn't the one showing +1/2/3 etc. encourage pointless repping too?

You'd be surprised at the first one Ben . I was Forum Manager when this little feature was introduced and the reason I didn't want -rep's included was purely because it is promoting negativity, -rep is private for a reason and showing the negativity between users could promote further negativity and lead to arguments/users being bullied.

I've found the +rep appearing as a good feature, especially in feedback as it enables you to see further into who supports certain ideas etc.

With nothing happening to the counter with -reps there can be (and have often been) cases where a post is not at all well received by most but 1 or 2 people +repping them makes it look like a popular opinion. If -reps don't have their own counter (which there really ought to be as it's still a genuine indicator of what sort of attitudes/ideas aren't accepted here) they should at least have an effect on how many +reps a post is shown to have

I think that showing -reps would be a good feature in feedback.

My argument has always been if they can see +rep they should be able to see -rep so it's equal. It's a shame there is nothing really any more that can decrease rep points because lets be honest the -rep feature is a total fail. It's pointless to use because it's too easy to get removed.

Could someone actually give me some examples of what is a legit -rep?

Well in my eyes a pointless rep is where it seems to not relate to the post.
Example: Someone posts a thread in spam and i say a joke about the subject. (Baring in mind it is in spam and could of been in a more controlled section) I get a -rep because i'm being offensive.
In my eyes it should be removed because of the forum it is posted in and the content of the post.

Above was a example i was not dicussing reps

To be fair though even if it's on topic it normally always gets removed. I have never had a problem with getting rep removed in the past. I just leave it there no as I sort of view rep as "a game" you go up the ladder but demons shoot you back down.
