We were talking about him in R.E today, when we were revising capital punishment etc. We were talking about how someone who's killed one person and knows they might get the death penalty or a life sentence for it could kill lots of people like he did, because they can only get killed once or live one life in jail.

I definitely think he should be punished accordingly.

Indeed, the time wasted on trivialities disregard the fact he admits to doing it, there is clear evidence he did it and the pain and suffering caused by his hands. He won't be killed for what he did as you rightly pointed out - Norway has not executed anyone for years - but what needs to be focused on is the punishment. It's amazing how much time has been spent by the Norwegian Courts on listening to a man who has already told the World what he has done and that the evidence is there, when they could just convict him and ask all these things later.

It makes me wonder whether having the court sessions dragged out and televised across the world will encourage others too like it possibly encouraged him (although he did assume he would die). I don't think these people should be given a platform, it's certainly not a human right. He should of course be entitled to defend himself like he would in this country with a gallery and all but writing a speech about his beliefs and doing something of a performance is just wrong in my eyes. I've little doubt he will have ended up influencing some far right across the world and no doubt some in Norway (some parties have seen big membership increases).
