    russell group isn't everythin tbh, i got offers from russell group uni and ended up not going to one, doesn't mean it is below par. i was mainly focused on choosing a uni with good future employment prospects, and so my course has a placement year (3rd year) which means my course is 4 years long, but experience will be a big help in finding me a grad job (WIV HOPE ANYWAY)

    in other news i get my results soon and want to vomit, economics y do u have to let me down. urgh

    Went for a job instead of opting for uni, and got one quite easily.

    The best uni doesn't mean the best one on the league tables. I chose my "below-par uni" (in term of league tables anyway) based on its small campus, city centre location and friendly atmosphere and I've enjoyed it.

    Agree completely. Durham is said to be the Uni for Oxbridge rejects and everyone is really posh and bright. Yet, it's rated 84 or something due to the fact that it's got very limited faculties, not as much research etc.

    What list is Durham ranked ~84? It's consistently ranked in the top 5-10 on pretty much all lists (Times, Good University Guide, etc) and more often than not on international rankings as well. They joined the Russell Group this year, but even before that they were in the 1994 Group. Along with Warwick University and University College London it is pretty popular among Oxbridge rejects, although that isn't a bad thing, obviously, since Oxbridge reject thousands of bright applications every year.

    You are looking at UK rankings. I'm talking about worldwide ranking lists. It is ranked there because the subjects it offers is limited, there aren't as many international students and it isn't as strong as some in research by professors. Many various factors are taken into account.

    At the end of the day, the big guns are the international Uni rankings. As proven otherwise (of what you claim) in Times WORLD Ranking http://www.timeshighereducation.co.u...2/top-400.html .

    Engineering is not a niche degree.

    @Grig

    Tbh unless you're planning to work abroad or something, world rankings doesn't mean a lot. National rankings are more important for most people.
