Doubt you will be waiting long, the 5 has been jailbroken.Google's also submitted a maps app to the AppStore and I would expect Apple is going to allow it through, so for the folks who miss having Google Maps who are on iOS6, you'll probably soon be able to get Google Maps back.
Apple allowed Microsoft's Bing mapping software into the AppStore and they also allowed Baidu's mapping software into the store (Chinese thing I believe) so I would be surprised if they denied gmaps.
I never update to the latest operating system on anything I expect to frequently use straight away after Mountain Lion and Vista didn't work how I wanted them to at first. I'll wait until iOS 6 has an untethered A5 jailbreak and then I'll upgrade.

I thought iOS maps could do satellite view as well, hardly demonstrating better features.
Unless they're selling it to people already informed about the disaster that is the iOS maps.
Chippiewill.
Probably to the informed where there is many mistakes and isn't very accurate compared to theirs. Plus if both screens are correct and isn't fake then it's showing that Google maps is showing what it really looks like where as iOS maps is incorrect.
There's a lot of pros and a lot of cons as to why I would buy or not buy either one of those phones.
I wouldn't not buy either one because I didn't like the "default mapping software". That would be like me flat out refusing to use Windows because I don't like Internet Explorer, or not using OS X because I don't like quicktime. Practically every operating system I've ever used has come with atleast one stock application which made me think "why in gods name did they include this if its so awful," but usually there's alternatives so I just swiftly hit my delete key and hop onto the interwebs to check those alternatives out.
I suppose its expected that the competition to Apple, and the generic anti-apple heads will complain about how horrible iOS is because of one app. If Apple banned all other companies maps I would understand the negative hype, but since they haven't done that I don't see the huge problem.
Looks very promisingDoubt you will be waiting long, the 5 has been jailbroken.

I heard it can do lots of things like turn by turn navigation but if it's as bad as folks are saying I don't think I'll ditch google maps just yet.

Source: http://www.latimes.com/business/tech...,6407240.storyGoogle Maps not coming to iPhone 5 anytime soon, Eric Schmidt says
The rift between Apple and Google over a map app grew wider Tuesday as Google Chairman Eric Schmidt said Apple device users shouldn't expect the company to offer them a Google Maps app anytime soon.
Apple dropped Google's app and replaced it with its own in the latest operating system, iOS 6, that it released last Wednesday. That meant the new iPhone 5 also did not include the Google Map. It had been a feature on the iPhone since the smartphone first launched in 2007.
The Apple Maps app offers new features to iPhone users, including 3-D maps, advanced live traffic updates and voice navigation, but it doesn't support directions for public transportation and its maps app doesn't appear to be as accurate as Google's in some areas.
"In my opinion it would have been better to retain our maps," he said, according to the Wall Street Journal. "It's their decision, I'll let them describe it."
There has been no word from Apple.
In their defence though default software tends not to get worse.

Google is in the interest of getting people to see their ads, google maps on iOS doesn't really achieve that and using the shocking quality of iOS maps to get people to move to Android is more beneficial to google right now.

Tim Cook:
To our customers,
At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.
We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.
There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.
While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.
Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

What's with the title of that article? Shouldn't it read iOS 6 instead of iPhone 5?
Anyway is that suggesting that Google is not willing to add a native app to iOS? Shame on Google, and even more reason to jailbreak for me.

The reason Apple switched mapping software is because Google never wanted to put turn by turn directions into the iOS version... I already have a GPS ready Android device and it great, but turn by turn isn't accurate on it (actually with Google Maps in general sometimes it thinks I'm driving ten meters beside the road which really messes up the turn by turn). Also neither Bing maps or Google maps have correct bus schedules for me either because when the transit company here changes their schedules Google and Microsoft do not update fast enough and because our buses don't have GPS trackers and because Microsoft and Google don't offer traffic information for my city so even if maps was reporting what time a bus is supposed to be here and that time was correct, traffic and the buses current position aren't taken into consideration and so faulty arrival and departure times are still given.
I don't know what ads you're talking about because I've never seen advertisements when using Google maps on my Android or iOS devices and the portable version of maps doesn't have ads either.
