So as long as a degree is academic - even though it doesn't actually guarantee you paid work afterwards - it is worthwhile?
I don't see your point here. I'd rather go to university to do a degree that will help me get a job rather than one that Oxbridge classifies as academic.

Yes. There's a reason why history, English lit, classics and modern languages are much more employable degrees than buiness studies, computing, media or journalism.

Still not sure why you think modern languages is a good degree to have (other than because you're doing it) when you'll be ousted by literally anyone with a genuine second language for a job that requires it and by anyone with a brain for any job that just requires a degree

No you haven't and what's employable is knowing more than one language; there are a great many people who are bilingual without a degree and having the paper to say you can count to ten in Spanish still doesn't put you in as good stead as someone who has spent their life naturally speaking a variety of languages. It's like the difference between being raised by famous parents and doing a degree in Lady Gaga Fame Studies.

I study Computer Networks, it isn't in that list but hey I'm a practical guy & though I'll probably have to work like on-call being a Network Engineer (the path I wanna go down), the money does get better with experience.

Did I mention work experience > degree in my field of expertise.
