My first day at uni was a bit crazy. I didn't know anyone else on the course, I only knew 2 other people at the whole uni who I never really saw at all in my three years there. I had to get a train (I commuted daily) and I'd never even got the train anywhere before in my life.

I got to uni and was looking for the right room when two girls looking for psychology found me and asked if that's where I was going. It wasn't, I was for maths So, deciding I had no idea where I was going I just went to reception and asked and found the room straight away. I was the first one there, the second person to show up was a guy who ended up being my closest friend at uni and we had all our classes together for three years, so it worked out in the end, just because we both happened to be nervous and early. Then as soon as you speak to someone you have a friend for the day and then it goes from there.

If everyone is new then everyone will be looking for a friend and so just mingle, don't be afraid to talk, I'm socially awkward and I coped. Everything worked out fine.

You soon get to know people not to worry. It's likely that most of the class will be in a similar situation to you so just be positive and have fun

When I first began college we had an induction day and we were put in groups that weren't our finalised class groups. Throughout the 4 lessons I had, I only knew one person who I was fairly close to in previous years, and another I'd known since nursery, but never really spoke to. I sat down in my media induction alone at a table and one person came and sat with me - then another came in and the person sat with me was their friend so sat with us too. We all worked together on something and it was really nice to have those there. Luckily, when we started in September they were both in my class and our friendship worked from there - one of them was my partner in my project so we did a movie trailer together! I had nothing to worry about - you sort of get talking to people.

What I suggest doing, find out people's names in your class and add them on Facebook or something similar, you could even try talking to them - it worked for me and got a couple of my closest friends at college that way.

Sometimes, you can make friends by accident too - my second year of media I was sat next to a boy who accidentally moved my Mac screen and he said sorry, from then on we spoke regularly and he's one of the only people I still talk to after college!

It can be really scary going to college, but if you're socially awkward then Facebook might be a good stepping point - if you're in a class you might get grouped with people and if you have a form/tutor you can always see if anyone there is in your class too. Also, if you have any extra activities like sports and clubs, join them and you never know you might have fun.

I forgot to mention, I was bullied a lot all my school life and before going to college I had no confidence, going to college gave me the biggest boost of confidence ever and I actually got an award from my tutors for my progression during the year which made me very happy. I have no doubt you will be fine and will fit right in You will come back from college tomorrow and post in this thread about how well it went, and probably so will I

id suggest that too. people might think its gonna be creepy but a LOT of uni people added me on facebook after talking just once or twice, it kinda gives u that seal of approval to talk to them in public.
