It can be effective if it's done well.
Our maths group full of year 11's has 3-4 A* students, 2-3 A students, 3-4 B students, and the rest C's or D's
anyone B+ really struggled in year 10 and 11 to go for the highest grades, whilst he spent all the time on C's and D's and just told us to work out the text books.
    Annoying really.
Smaller classes of about 15 Work a lot better too, but the strain on the cost of all the teachers would be so strong so that's not going to happen anytime soon.

Thats what they are doing next year from when i leave. They are putting 3 year 7's, 3 year 8's. 3 year 9's, 3 year 10's 3 year 11's 3 year 12's and 3 year 13's in each tutor grop. I personally think this is a really bad idea seeings it can cause schools to get split. I was told that it was ment to help bullying and things.. but i think its a terrible idea.

My school started this last year and we all hated the idea but once we got used to it we were alright with it.
