    You can do this but you would be better to mount the Hardrive in the Desktop.
    Use Laplink gold or a network conenction and map the dell laptop as a network drive.

    wireless? and share folders.. or router and share folders, if you put linux on it , you could install webmin or something and use it as a server

    Okay but say for instance I was playing music could I have my Windows Media Player playing from the folder on the other PC with my music in.

    That is possible if your connected to the same router. Ive done it before on my laptop and on my ps3 too

    Yes, however this will not be possible until the release of Windows 7.. it has the facilities to create a home group of each computer and save data to and from the networked PC.

    I downloaded 300GB via windows 7 from my XP machine. Download speeds were about 5.9MB as it is networked.

    5.9MB/s ? That's pretty slow, is your XP machine IDE? Normally when I'm transferring files from one pc to another over a 100Mbit link it goes a lot faster :S

    Well considering wireless to wired would cause that...

    My computer is not that old IDE is in the 1990s... OOhhh I remember the old Dell Dimension Intel Pentium II processor with 256MB ram running Windows 98... Aha. G'd old days.
