He would have a phenomenally larger variety of applications to choose from with an Android device.

Apps doesn't make a phone. The experience makes the phone. It's what annoys me about the Apple ecosystem who think that because a phone has a TON of apps means it's great. Oh I'm sorry because I need 70 fart apps to choose from -.-. The Apps that WebOS have are very very good, and with HP now throwing their weight behind it means that more devs will come to the platform.

The performance of the OS does have a lot to do with it, you're right, but it is always nice to know that you have at your exposal thousands of cool applications

The OS has basically all the basic functionality you'll get from Apps built in, as well as many apps to do things on the fly. It's very easy to build apps for WebOS, it's easier than Android. But as I said you don't need thousands of crappy apps, when you can get few very well-built apps.

I heard something about javascript development which is quite easy. In that regard I quite enjoy it although I'm not sure why it never really lifted off big for Palm.

It's all Web Language for Palm WebOS, hence the name WebOS. It didn't take off because it didn't really have a heavyweight name behind it and a lot of newbie tech people hadn't heard of it so it was like people didn't see it or try it, so developers didn't get behind it. Now however, they've got HP behind it so should be more successful getting devs and end-users.

Yeah I was sort of bummed when that happened. I was looking forward to a Windows 7 tablet from HP.

HP Slate is still coming out. And there is still speculation that it'll be consumer as well as Enterprise. Also HP Slate will obviously still be running Windows 7.
