I am aware of how they go together. You don't always *need* your flywheel replaced but it is usually replaced at the same time depending on the mileage/wear due to the gearbox being detached, thus removing the future risk of flywheel failure and taking apart the gearbox once again.
Needless to say the figure still seems rather steep. Generally you'd be looking at up to £400 for parts unless the vehicle had a large engine, drivetrain or was a performance car in which case it would usually be a little more. £1000 is far in excess of what I would pay, let alone 'upwards of.' I picked up a refurbished gearbox, brand new clutch and dual mass flywheel for £650 for the Golf I had, it was fitted within a day using an engine crane and I got £100 for the gearbox which was bought to be refurbished and sell on in the future.
