As said in previous posts.
My recommendation would be to get some compressed air and clear out any vents that are visible. This will get rid of any dust that may be causing the vents to be basically useless.
I'm not too sure how savvy you are with computers but personally I'd take the case off then spray it out just to be sure you're getting rid of dust not just pushing it deeper into the unit.
Also if the vents are blocked a cooling pad is only so effective.
But that said laptops are very prone to getting hot and overheating. So a cooling pad is a great idea. Any chance you could tell me what model laptop you have? I can then give you a few links to a few different things you could do, and a few examples of things you could buy.
If both of those two options don't work do let me know and I'll message you with a few more technical steps that you could take. But these are the simplest and cheapest things you could do.
