Heroes imply they actually save people... Anyway soldiers get their own "rewards". It should be for anyone who has made a significant contribution, which Murray has yet to do.

Soldiers aren't heroes, that's their job.

I think that people who have shaped British history should be considered definitely. To be fair to him though, he has been offered it before, or at least brought up but he doesn't think he deserves it yet, which shows a great deal of integrity I think.

Personally, I'd probably wait until he's world no.1, or if that doesn't look possible in the future, later on in his career.
He has only won 1 other grand slam, so he's hardly one of the great tennis players of all time, despite being in the top 4 for a while now.

Also number 1 status should not give you a knighthood either. Rory McIlroy has certainly been Number 1 in golf, I'm sure. And technically Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are the 'No 1' when they win the World Championship in Formula 1, and they just got an MBE

And he's not been offered it, he's just been told that Cameron says he deserves one, and he disagrees

Are you joking? They do their job on a daily basis to save the lives of the innocent, every role is important.

You have to be joking? Fighting for our countries, and actually saving lives doesn't make then heroes?!

I cannot believe peoples attitudes towards soldiers on this forum.

Currently, soldiers do not fight for our country but fight simply for a job. Also, our military has probably killed just as many innocent people as those who actually pose a threat.

Nobody is actually attacking our country.

I'm shocked. Soldiers still fight daily in many ways to protect our country. It's not just a 'job'.

If you could tell me how they're currently protecting this country then go ahead.

Not every soldier is a "hero", that's the point.

A hero is someone who does something heroic, therefore not every soldier can be one.

He doesnt deserve it for hitting a ball over the net, and I know a lot of people who donate massive sums of money to charity and no-one flutters an eyelid. Its just because hes famous, hence why he gets all the attention. Yeah yeah, hes won a competition and got paid millions of pounds just for advertising rights and stuff alone. He doesn't deserve a knighthood for that.

On the solider discussion, I agree with @Adam; to some extent. Yes, they fight for our country and all that stuff. I have a lot of respect for people on the front line, and I have a lot of pride for what they do for the country, but they made the choice to do it. Also not all soliders are heroes, the media makes every solider to be a perfect human fighting for our country, but like every job there are some complete idiots in the army, also a lot of people who use their ranks to draw attention to themselves.

I honestly don't understand why because a solider save one persons life, and because they are fighting in wars that our government is probably instigating they are suddenly given all these merits and admirations. When it comes to that, nurses/doctors and anyone in the medical profession are 100% more deserving of those labels than soldiers. My family know a marine, and he has just been flown to dubai for 3 months. 1st class tickets, expensive hotel and a healthy amount of cash for luxury items (alcohol, cigs, clothes).. such a hero. Obviously there is some people in the armed forces that are genuine heroes, but just because some are they're not all the same.

    They have a choice.

I'm pro-national service, by the way.

If soldiers do something heroic then sure, they're heroes but doing their job? Nah.
