I wouldn't say it's destroying the English language. It's tainting it with more pleabian verbiage, but I suppose that's all its accomplished. Not only this, but many students' English grades are suffering because they prefer to short-hand their writings as if they were texting someone. In my school, many students actually forget the rules of writing over the summer and return to school with 'Text Speak' which they apply on their writings. (i.e, writing U instead of You.)

I believe this is just laziness and apathy towards academics by students because I don't believe a month or two or occasional texting is enough to make one forget any rules of writing.

Considering the English language is easy to write, speak, read and understand, people should stick to it properly.

Abbreviations I have no problem with, because people use them all the time, so most understand it. (Atm, btw, wth/f, lol, lmao, rofl, etc etc). And to some extent using y in place of why, u in place of you, etc.

But not shortening every second word. That just annoys me, and makes you look stupid, sorry.

oh, and don't give me the "I only type/write like that when I'm chatting/other excuse", because you get into the habit of doing it. I was in that habit, and now I'm in the habit of having proper spelling, punctuation and grammar, and it's a good habit.

I always type and text perfect English. I just don't like speaking in short forms, with exceptions of brb, lol, etc.

The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse *****. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary. "/

Okay I've not read much of what everyone else is saying, but I don't see what the big deal is.

The English language, overtime, has gradually been developing and it always will continue to do so. For people to send a text or talkg in 'txt' on the internet... who cares? Thats what a lot of teenagers these days do, it's modern - so maybe you are just living behind people? :s

It doesn't harm anyone so I don't really see the huge deal...

It's not a matter of what's 'cool' right now at all. Yes, the English language will continue to expand over time, but the point here is that its original form is being disregarded completely. And it's nor modern either, just laziness.

And actually, yes, it does harm people. Like I said in my previous post, many teenagers are utilizing text speak and substituting the correct wording with it, which eventually ends up being a low grade, ergo, harming that student's academic status.
