The Italian Job has to be the worst remake. Along with The Invasion, The Wicker Man and Psycho.

Absolutely, The Invasion was horrific to watch - watching remakes for me conjures a visual screen the whole way through contrasting in motion the old and the new, and that was just terrible. I still stand by words that Psycho is the worst and most pointless remake of all time, though, I mean, Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates? Please.

It would also be interesting for people to note the best remakes they have seen. Off the top of my head, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2003, gets my vote as a decent remake, and much more of an homage than a blatant cash-in. When a writer and director vow to make an homage to a classic film, you can actually see the effort, rather than when it goes completely out the window with money solely on the mind, i.e. Prom Night, to annotate the present. I'm sure people will disagree with me about TCM, but I thorougly enjoyed it, and The Beginning was not so bad either, that being a sequel, certainly the second best following The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. The 2003 version is by no means close to the original, but still definitely worthwhile.

The Hills Have Eyes 2 (if that was a remake? I swore there was an original sequel but I'm not sure) and The Wicker Man.

Wes Craven's original The Hills Have Eyes was fantastic, but his sequel was horrible. He has been hit-and-miss his entire career. The remake of The Hills Have Eyes was surprisingly decent in my mind, but the sequel, which was more of a re-imagination of Craven's second film, was equally as visually vile as the first sequel.

    Some American remakes were crap:

The Eye, The Grudge, The Ring. Destroyed classic films!

I wouldn't call them pointless cos it's obvious why they were "remade". But I agree, compared to the original foreign films they're bad. I didn't like the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre because it lacked the cheapness of the original which added to the atmosphere. I didn't like the remake of Halloween either, it lacked subtlety.

Conversely, I thought the first remake of Invasian of the Body Snatchers was better than the original. Maybe because it was made when horror movies were good.
