Small minded? Hardly. The point of a film is to entertain, and if it fails to do so then it certainly deserves a place among the worst films. Films like Manos at least succeed in that people hunt them out to watch because of their awful reputation - Jaws just isn't exciting at any point.

The acting is some of the finest ever seen in a film. The cinematography is absolutely fantastic. The element of terror is heightened to an extreme that no film had ever produced at the time of its release. It was the first summer blockbuster. What you see today, these big summer releases, the marketing strategy is all thanks to JAWS. The brilliant story is adapted from a number one best-selling novel. It has one of the most well known soundtracks to ever be recorded.

JAWS is a masterpiece and one of the greatest films ever made. No film has had a greater effect on its audience envoking fear upon generation after generation of viewers when they set foot in the water.

As for taste? Those who like the film greatly outnumber those who don't about a million to one. It is one of the most famous and beloved films ever created. Those who think it is garbage simply have something wrong with them, because they obviously do not understand films.

Or for the average film watcher... boring. If it was on Tv now I wouldn't watch it, it's never made me feel that "OMG THAT'S AN AMAZING FILM", I watched it, shrugged, and then put something else on.

The "average film watcher" is as wowed as everybody else. It is an extreme minority who will proverbially spit on JAWS.

There is no need to bring Manos: The Hands Of Fate into this thread. Have you even seen it? Hardly anyone has actually seen the film, and JAWS has a reputation for so many different reasons. It is a masterpiece. Spielberg's most successful film.

Obviously modern audiences do not know what good dialogue is, atmosphere, music, performances, etc, etc, etc, etc.

funny that a's in both film studies & media studies.
    i understand films perfectly well.

the narrative is repititive & tiring, the mis-en-scene of the WHOLE film is dire.

The Beatles and Shakespeare did a lot in their respective industries, doesn't mean everyone think's they're marvelous.

Haha, you have no idea what you are talking about, do you. Your studying of film has gone as far as Stephen Hawkin has ran.

Would you care to actually explain what's so good about it, rather than just listing the various things that you need to make a film? The acting is entirely forgettable; the camera work is.. well, it's professional of course, but it's not really anything that awes me and strikes me as pretty normal; the "element of terror" may well have surpassed any film of the time but if that makes it great then you have to say Blair Witch Project was good, and let's not be lying now.

Yes it envoked a paranoia - based on falsehoods. The film "The Truman Show" causes paranoia in a lot of people I know who've seen it, and frankly most horror films do (not that The Truman Show is a horror film).

So let me get your final point straight: you're all for independance, originality and expression, yet you refuse to acknowledge that anyone who doesn't share your opinion could be justified? You even insult my sanity and intelligence based on the fact that I don't like a film. Pray do tell why one needs to "understand" film to have an opinion, or even how you come to the conclusion that I don't understand film in the first place.

you call us smallminded yet you cannot understand others opinions? and, my study of film is just that i'm not making a film that just sounds like a complete remake of house of a 1000 corpses.
