Effects aren't everything. For crying out loud, when you start saying that the effects were 'brill' then you need to start considering really what you look for in a movie.
Effects should never be anywhere near the centre stage of any film, because then the film WILL fail. Take the prequel Star Wars movies for example. They're cult classics, but only because of the original trilogy, but the effects just try to dance around in your face.
That being said, Revenge of the Sith was pretty good.
Independence Day, Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla and now 2012 all put effects in their advertising slogans, their trailers and the films themselves. It wouldn't be as bad if there was a story or some sort of purpose to it, but it's just a never ending "oooh look".
Independence Day had Will Smith wondering where he was, Day After Tomorrow had some of the most dumb-downed science to it (so dumb-downed that it couldn't possibly exist), Godzilla was laughably bad and now 2012 will just be a CGI show. It's like going to the theatre and only seeing the smoke and sets. Sometimes they're impressive, but that's all they should be, in the background or giving atmosphere to the film.
No doubt that this film will take in gazillions of ka-ching, if only thanks to its moron audience who think Transformers is one of the best films of all time. I'm not saying any of you are morons, feel free to nitpick me and tell me I'm wrong, but I cannot stand people who think films are meant to just show off explosions and special effects. I'm sure you will disagree with me billions and then cover it up by saying "the acting and story were great".
All I can say is:

I'm getting the impression you guys did not intend to both use that facepalm?! Kinda funny because I haven't seen it in a long time!
Even if you love special effects and are happy with a film if everything about it is garbage other than the effects, can you really apply that to three hours worth of film?!
Transformers 2 was the same. It was just two and half hours or something worth of action. I was literally almost dozing off half way through because it's just boring.
'Sometimes they like to destroy stuff with something else that's being destroyed at the same time'. Perfect.

After seeing this film Saturday night I was somewhat shocked. The film was good at first but started to have a downfall at the end that just wasn't to pleasing in my terms. The plot does follow up behind it however, the world does get demolished and stuff but DOES NOT END.
As you feel the suspense building up your expectations can suddenly be crashed down by a simple rescue mission. Turns out the government had these so called 'Arks' built to save just the important people. People began to find out and were outraged so they had no choice but to let them on after being persuaded.
After everyone was rescued we learn that Africa had never gone under water and is the highest place on earth (With some masses of water on it). So the human race ends up living there and you have your 'the end.'
Frankly, I was expecting more. Maybe a little kid being alive standing there crying with just a teddy bear but surely not this.
