Okay though really spoilers, don’t read ahead if you haven’t watched Orphan Black.
The “respiratory disease” that Katja and Cosima have is a failsafe put into their genetic code by the people who designed them, much like Jurassic Park’s Lysine Contingency.
Basically, the neolutionists put a genetic defect into the clones’ genetic codes that only they were able to stabilize, in order to force the clones to depend on the neolutionists. If any of them started to cause trouble or tried to run away, the neolutionists would simply stop administering the treatment and allow them to die off. The treatment would be administered during the medical exams orchestrated by their monitors.
This would be consistent with the fact that Katja got sick after she fled Europe and went into hiding, which would mean her monitor not being able to administer her treatment. Also, Cosima only started to get sick after her monitor defected from the neolutionists.
But then, that begs the question of why Helena and Sarah never got sick. I’d say that whatever’s different about them that caused them to naturally twin in the womb and gives them the unique ability to reproduce naturally is the same thing that gives them an immunity to the failsafe. I don’t think the neolutionists were aware of this, and the reason why they never placed a high priority of finding Sarah and Helena is because they assumed they must have died on their own, because they don’t have monitors and would not have received treatment for the failsafe defect.
I think that’s why it’s so important to the neolutionists to get Kira. I think that Kira, as well as Sarah and Helena, have some sort of natural immunity to the instability that could be used to stabilize the other clones and free them from the neolutionists’ control. I think that when they discovered that Sarah and Helena had been living outside their control, and that Sarah had reproduced of her own volition, that they could potentially break their grip on all the clones.

started this today and i'm hooked, probably gonna finish the rest tomorrow.

start was a little odd but i got more into in ep 2.

they r always generally the cutest!!!

ep2 is prolly the less like action-y one but the rest r fab!

finished it, wowowowow how long til s2

cosima best clone. i would say sarah was but her accent wasn't the best and idk probably bc she's the main i don't feel shes my fav.
other clone was so bland until the party day thing. that's when i started to like her.

cosima is always the best ahah, i think it is the science tbh....

alison is fab!! she had one of the best character development tbh
