in short: his fault. he has every right to break up with her if it bothers him that much, but thats really a ridiculous reason. what the girl probably thought was "if he would break up with me for such a stupid and insignificant reason, he obviously doesnt like me that much."
im in the same situation, my girlfriend started smoking while i was dating her, but its her life.

My girlfriend knows that if she starts smoking that I won't go out with her any more.
However she also thinks it's vile so there is no chance of it happening.
I think it's a disgusting habit and I find the smell repulsive and putrid.
