It's interesting though that none of them were saying how great it was they could have 50 Rep Power so they could help out newer members and how they hoped it would be permanent.

50 does seem to be a bit too high to be honest, frankly if I was a new member and I saw that all the people saying Hello to me had a rep power of 50, I'd probably just feel dwarfed by it and give up on rep right there!

I think people are forgetting what "Reputation" really is, essentially how high it is, is your "Reputation" on the forum like it or not. If you go on the "Members List" and then list members by the amount of Reputation they have, the most respected, influential, helpful and people with the all around "best" reputations are towards the top of this list.

If a new member is making a decent post, everyone will rep it as per usual. I don't look at who it is when I rep someone, I just look at the quality of the post and I'm sure everyone else is no different. There's no need for admins reputation to be adjusted to essentially "fake" the reputation of newbies.

What constitutes a "pointless" rep? The word is reputation, and in the real world a good reputation is gained for social standing just as much as actual activity if not more, so I'd say there really isn't such a thing as pointless reputation - negative or positive.

That aside, I don't think we've been given a legit reasoning for the change anyway. It won't really affect me I'm sure but claiming that it'll help new members and then claiming that admins will only rep responsibly and not give random +reps to people just for being new seems to undermine the community's ability to reward our own peers using the system that we've been using for years. If I see a good post, I'll rep it, no matter who the author is, and I don't see why it's being suggested that only admins are capable of such judgement

Don't forget to check all those people with 50 rep power
Yep, with all those savings from removing pointless rep we can distribute it amongst those people. It can be some sort of rep tax. Thanks for the idea .

Oh also a quick example of pointless reps would be a rep back.

I am curious as to why you think pointless rep only affects those with the highest rep powers? Those with lots of rep have generally been on the forum at least four or five years and then as you go down the list the join dates become more recent. It's an incredibly average hierarchy really and everything looks as it should. Pointless rep is widespread, it affects the entire forum, not just those with higher reputation, but really is it that big an issue?

It seemed to be a big enough of an issue of you to change it in the first place though...

Feedback would be rather crap place (Although it usually is when you've anything to do with it anyway) if everytime you changed something you turned around and said it's not a big issue.

Forget Admins having 50 rep power, it's the fact they can tell that new members want help gaining rep by being "bumped along" that worries me. How on earth did you do a survey on this?

Just looked through some of my old reps (not all of them obv) and I reckon if all the "rep back" entries were deleted I'd only lose maybe a couple of hundred rep points, jus' sayin'

Also I again state that we haven't had any logical reasoning for this change. If you simply say "because I want more rep power" then fine that's your choice as the owner and I'll accept that far more happily than a half-excuse about helping new members whilst somehow not showing them favouritism
