Please, I'm not defending One Direction as credible, ultra-talented and game changing musicians. I'm just saying there is absolutely no such thing as "real" music. In response to your dubstep example, technically all music is noise.
Playing an instrument doesn't define someone as a "real" musician either, a talented vocalist, rapper or producer can be more influential and talented than someone who does play instruments. Elvis was hardly a virtuosic guitar player, he wasn't known for that. I adore Elvis but he is the King for different reasons. In fact I'm pretty sure I've seen a picture of a One Direction gig where one of them is playing guitar anyway.
Of course they are just the latest fad moulded for money, and evidently it's working. The point is there is absolutely no such thing as "real" or "proper" music.
mu·sic/ˈmyo͞ozik/
Noun:
The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.
What One Direction produces is music. You're trying to debate the credibility of their music and whether the fact they are manufactured to the core demeans their status as musicians. It's still music whichever way you r opinion sways on that matter.

And no, I couldn't get all fangirly over them as they are just too cheesey and for use of a better word 'gay.' (There really needs to be a better descriptive word there, because clearly they aren't gay but you know what I mean
