If you're running a version of Windows now, then you will be able to buy and download the Win 8 upgrade edition. In the downloader there is the option to burn it to a disc. You can then as normal, reformat your hard drive and install a clean install of Win 8 from the upgrade disc. When it comes to activating it once the operating system is installed there is a little registry hack you have to do and then it will activate as if it was a full install and not just an upgrade![]()
I'm TRYING to upgrade to it now but it keeps getting stuck at the second 'preparing' screen at 2%. Rather annoyed right now.![]()
Windows 8 Users:
I've came across a pretty cool application that lets you create your own tiles for the start screen. So if you wanted the tiles for the applications to look different to what they do by default then this will come in handy.

Pretty handy if you want to make applications have metro looking tiles instead of the default ones they came with when you install them.
Had some gift cards for a retailer here lying about so thought might as well go for it and paid $18 in the end.
Installed it first time around, then for the first time since buying my netbook I noticed the processor is 64-bit (Acer used 32-bit so assumed that it was just 32-bit). So reinstalled with the 64-bit disc.
Last night, I did feel like I regretted it. However, I got used to the Metro UI and have been enjoying it. Seems a lot faster to boot up and .. well just in general!
Just hope the pricing for the next Office is just as good.
I can sort of see the reasons behind it coming off as a Touch UI rather than a keyboard and mouse interface, the tiles do seem huge (I can't make a proper opinion until actually buying it when I get home, I'm using full-screen videos and forming an idea of what it is like from that). Can they be shrunk so your eyes don't strain? They tiles seem like they would be really useful on desktop computers if they can smaller.

There's an option there to make the tile smaller. But smaller just means it makes it into those squares instead. Other than that, you can get rid of it all together. Though if you meant shrunk as in show it as if it's like an icon then I haven't seen such option but I like that idea.
Oh another thing about my Windows 8 experience is that I got a bit pee'd off when none of the Metro apps would load because my resolution is 1024 x 600 when I think it's minimum has to be 1024 x 768. Oh well, a simple registry tweak later and the apps work fine.
I'm thinking more 1/4 the size of the Desktop/Store/Maps/SkyDrive tiles. On a large screen, those sized tiles would be perfect. But the size they are in that image seem like they could be unbelievably painful after a while

To be quite honest, I use the desktop more than Metro at this moment in time so the sizing of the tiles isn't really an issue for me. In terms of eye straining, with all gadgetries not just computers, it's the brightness that annoys me. Which is why I use F.lux
Edit: though having said that it's a pain in the arse scrolling across the tiles on such a small screen. But hey that's a first world problem, I have other things to worry about!

I installed on of the first releases on bootcamp, but didn't like it but I'm sure I will try the final one![]()
