Busted for a "Saturday Night Live" lip-synch gone awry, Ashlee's manager-father said his 20-year-old daughter used the extra help on SNL because acid reflux disease had made her voice hoarse.
"Just like any artist in America, she has a backing track that she pushes so you don't have to hear her croak through a song on national television," Joe Simpson told Ryan Seacrest on Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM. "No one wants to hear that."
He insisted it would be Ashlee's live voice alone during her appearance on NBC's "Radio Music Awards."

Ashlee Simpson received a discernible chorus of boos during her halftime performance at the Orange Bowl college football game in Miami.
"You make me wanna scream," she sang before some of the 72,000 audience members jeered.
Simpson, who sang her song "La La," was among a trio of halftime performers in a game that saw Southern California overwhelm Oklahoma 55-19. The camera cut away from her face as the booing began.
Simpson lated suggested, "Maybe they were booing at me, maybe they were booing at the halftime show 'cause the whole thing ****ed," she said. "I was facing [the Oklahoma Sooners], and I was rooting for USC, and they played a clip of it, so maybe it was that those people didn't like me. You never know. But I can't make everybody happy."
