When it loads all I get is a red X at the corner of the screen.

Not for me, try rebooting your computer.
If its not that then check your Java compatability, Rs runs on Java

Honestly, no idea. Also if its not java then check your Pop-Up blocker or internet secuirty, high security can cause it to block runescape.
