If you do have 10 Defence other people your level with have higher strength than you.

it's only gone up 2 combats though, and that would help protect me, does it have any affect on gettin prayer?

Because 10 defence levels, allows other pures to get maybe even more than 10 strength levels and the same amount of combat levels, so your pretty much shooting yourself in the foot.
