In my opinion, too many Mario games.

Mario is one of Nintendo's flagship characters. It's been a high influence in pop culture throughout the decade. Sequels, prequels, re-hashes are always made when a game gets popular. Some of the more recent ones would be the Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy (old + new), and the Halo franchises. Unlike Mario, however, there is only one theme to those games so other genres are impossible to capture. These are the characters that make or break game consoles because without them, things would be very boring.

But take note that even though there are millions of mario games, each one of them has a different way to play, apropos, there are a million ways to play Mario. This is why it always sells- the games just click.
