Default charity to try & shut down bebo, myspace & friendster.

i was just watching sky news, mainly cus my school is on it rofl, and i came across a story that included three sites that i'm sure quite alot of people on here use. a childrens charity 'kidscape' are making pleas/gathering support to shut down bebo/myspace & friendster. their claims for the 'shutdowns' are that the sites are potentially dangerous and allow peadophiles to 'groom' their targets & post fake photos and information about themselves.
what do you think about the proposed shutdowns? are you for or against it & why.

personally i'm against it because I believe if you do actually use sites like that & other profile sites you should have the common sense not to take someone at face value.

I hope Myspace don't get taken down, I think most of us are actually mature enough to not meet anyone off the net, unless we've seen or spoken to them.

If I'm not wrong, you hear about girls meeting up with men off the internet, but they KNOW they are men before they meet them? Becuase they run away with them :s. So, it doesn't seem that most people steal identites and fake pictures.

But of course, a select few will.

Its not myspaces fault when parents dont teach there children Netiquette or basic safty information. Its at about the same level as don't take sweets from strangers.
Maybe we should make streets illegal as well o.0

totally totally agree with that. if schools/parents taught their children more internet safety or like.. stranger safety or basic common sense, we wouldn't have this kind of trouble.

I want to slap people like that. What are the parents thinking?

"When I look at my child, putting information about him/herself on myspace, Im helpless to do anything about it... I wonder where the system went wrong"

Here's where the system went wrong: YOURE A BAD PARENT if you do this. These people are doing the wrong thing if they want to protect their kids. You know who you talk to when you want to protect your own child? YOUR CHILD! THE PARENTS have to regulate what sites their kids go on, but that doesnt mean try to shut down the site completely.

Indeed. The System falls apart at the parents. If they don't want their kids to go onto certain sites, then block them. No need to ruin it for millions/billions of other people who use Myspace to chat to friends across the globe and find out about their favourite bands. If I was a mother/father in this scenario, I would of taught my children about strangers around the time they're out of nappies.

I wouldn't think a child needs to go on a site like Myspace. There is no need to, they won't understand it, they won't know what it is about for a few months. I am starting to wonder how many children actually use Myspace. I've only ever seen a 12 year old on it, and this is a friend of my cousins. Surely a 12 year old would know better if they're parents have taught them correctly? I think paedophilia is the sign that there are bad parents out their, and obviously strange people. A child cannot seriously be dragged off the street if they have a good parent? A good parent would make sure she/he is with someone.
