It's stupid, in my opinion. I admit, people can become good friends over the internet.. yet it is impossible to form a real bond with someone because you don't actually really know them.

I think its pathetic and just an excuse for not being able to do it in real life. Yes, friends can be made online but a relationship through text, webcam/mic now and then? No. Not something I'm for anyway, but whatever floats your boat.
