Default Fear of the darkness, the supernatural.

I don't know where to put this, so I thought of putting it here. If it's in the wrong forum, Mod please move it.

Anyway, I've always been afraid of the darkness and the supernatural. It all started when I was very young. I was watching a scary movie on the television with my parents. Since that day, I became really scared of the darkness and the supernatural, things we cannot explain.

But yesterday I was at camp, they were showing this scary movie, everyone had to watch it, it was compulsory. It was probably one of the worst mistakes ever. I should never had watched it. My teacher just told me to cover my face and hold my best friend's hand. It was embarrassing, and if I saw a scary part, I would scream.

And now, I'm even more scared of the darkness, the night, and ghosts. I don't even dare to go to the toilet alone at night now, and I'm afraid of my own shadow. I really want to overcome this fear, as it is really scaring me. The movie I watched last night is still flashing in my mind, and I get timid when I think of the scary parts. Help, thanks.

if you thought it was that bad, why didnt you leave? im sure they cant force you to stay, they have no right to do that. when you think about it, think about something else, something fun that happend in your life, maybe a holiday or a day out somewhere.

The thing is, we were camping at school, and at that time, it was already late, the school lights have been turned off, and we were the only ones in the school. I didn't want to leave the room and be out there, alone. That would be even scarier tbh. I try to think about something else, I try to think of happy thoughts, but it never works, my fear always has its way of getting to me.

I don't mind the dark, except for when I'm driving. I don't like meeting other cars because their headlights bother my eyes, especially those Xenon lights.
The Xenon lights are those really bright ones that look blue. But other than that I'm not really scared scared of the dark.

Dunno why this is important but what was the film? Something in the storyline might make you overcome it, however silly that sounds.

I know what you mean I get scared of the dark too, just don't sleep in the dark sleep with your bedroom door open or something

It's a Thai movie with subtitles. It's called "Shutter", unfortunately there is no solution in the story, everyone ends up dead, it wasn't pretty. Now I have a fear of going to toilets alone and looking at photos because of certain things in the movie.

I've heard that we were too young to watch the movie. It was rated 16 or something, and we were all below 16. Ahh. And erm, I have a nightlight
Haha. I don't sleep alone either, I share my room with my sister.

Edit: Ooh, I never noticed your post Expedition, sorry. I agree, Xenon lights are annoying. It's good that you aren't afraid, but do you know how to overcome the fear of darkness?

Personally, I would take this head on. "Choose" one of your fears and take it head on. For example, you say you don't like going to the toilet on your own; one night, just do it! Get out of bed, make your way to the toilet. Don't turn on the lights, just do it
This will slowly help you, it just depends on whether you have the strength to do it in the first place.

Well, I'm afraid of the dark because I'm afraid that something scary might appear suddenly, something supernatural. Because of my fear of the supernatural, I am afraid of the dark.

I might try that, thanks. +Rep to everyone who has tried to help.

Nixt is right, tackling it head on is a good idea.
One night, just get up and do it, don't panic, try to stay calm, and once it's over, you'll feel really proud of yourself that you actually overcame the fear for once.

Ok Herman, i'm actually quite like you since i'm kinda scared of the dark and going alone by myself in the night even at my own house, but it's not as extreme as yours.

What I think of is that, what are the chances of anyone or anything being in your house besides your parents and sister? If anything happens you know your parents are there. Second, in life, if you don't try anything to tackle your fears, you'll just be scared forever. So take Nixt's idea and just go to the toilet or anywhere without being scared.

Something else that helps me is leaving the lights on in the dark. I leave the passage light always on. I'm not sure if your parents will let you leave it on, but if they do, just do that.

    Hope this helps.
