Default Are you being taught Citizenship Properly? DISCUSS!

Ofsted and the Government are criticising schools for teaching Citizenship without enthusiasm. This new report follows an anti war protest by London Secondary school students. An Ofsted Inspector says: "Is citizenship 'intended to produce compliant young people or to educate them to be critical and active citizens?'" From Ofsted reports over the past few years, it has been reported that Citizenship is not being taught in a very "enthusiastic manner".
The Ofsted Inspector asked: "Were the London Secondary School students who staged the protest being critical and active citizens or should they have been taught that the Prime Minister is the elected leader of their country, endorsed by the electoral and parliamentary process, and therefore entitled to respect?"
One of the main reasons the Government believe that schools are not teaching Citizenship with enthusiasm is the fact that it is only possible to take a short course in the subject. 0.5 of a GCSE is not really going to stand out on the league tables.
More teachers are currently being trained in Citizenship therefore the Government hopes for the enthusiasm of the subject to increase in the next few years.

We're doing it as a GCSE. And admittedly, we aren't being taught it properly as our teacher is useless and we have only ever done one lesson on the subject.

It's just labelled Religious Education at our school. Citizenship doesn't actually come into it much.

At my school, in years 10 and 11, we had 1 lesson called "life skills" each week, which was mostly religious stuff, but we also did a bit of citizenship. It was a waste of time, we got mostly crap teachers, nobody did any work, and nobody learnt anything.

We don't have the lesson at my school , we have to do Religious Studies GCSE but thats nothing to do with Citizenship and we have a PSHE lesson every week but thats a lesson the whole school has.

Yeah , because seriously the teachers have never even mentioned the words citizenship and subject together , heck I don't even think they have ever used the word citizenship :p
