Once formed into a shape thermosetting plastics cannot be re-shaped.

Theromosets are resistant to heat. and although they are quite hard, they can be chipped or cracked by being dropped or banged.

Thermosetting plastics are used to make work tops, electrical fittings such as plugs and switches and fibre glass, that can be used for boat hulls, car bodies etc.

Thermoplastics cannot be used in situations where they will get hot because they go soft when they are heated, although they harden again at room temperature.

There are, however, hundreds of jobs for which they can be used, for example – packaging chocolates, aerosol tops or as rulers.

Elastomers
This is the rubbers group. Some people do not consider rubbers as plastics but they are included because they are polymers.

Elastomers are very flexible and elastic and are used to make tyres, elastic bands, oil seals, roller skate wheels etc.
