how the UK school systems work

i see people post 5th year and year 7 and stuff. what do they mean.

here in america its

kindergarten - young uns
1st grade
2nd grade
3rd grade
4th grade
5th grade
6th grade
7th grade
8th grade
9th grade (freshman)
10th grade (sophmore)
11th grade (junior)
12th grade (senior)

COLLEGE

13th (freshman)
14th (sophmore)
15th (junior)
16th (senior)

and then it goes on depending on what degree you want.

in a doctorates degree you go all the way to 24th GRADE!

not really, we're pretty straighthrough alike.
we both have grades, and after grade 12, it's college/university.

And also Education in England is compulsory up untill Year 11 (15/16) after that you can get a job, or go to college to then go to university
