I think that everybody is born with the ability to manipulate, it's just some people don't use it.
I know this sounds childish and primary schoolish but I am sick and tired of my apparent 'friends' turning against me and being you-know-whats because they've been manipulated and they can't resist it.
There are three successful manipulators in my group at school who are now ex-friends; one of them is a control freak and is so jealous and possessive that she will go to any lengths to keep herself as the only person her manipulatee will want to talk to and hang with; the other is good at making people say stuff they don't mean and backstab people; and the final one is the house captain and governs over my group and she is capable of anything.
Have you ever had your friends turned against you by somebody like this?
