VB is not essential, PHPBB is really good, im good with PHPBB too so ill be a better admin

I prefer any forum which is popular really, i don't really mind what sort of forum they use.

you do know there is like billions of popular forums which use PHPBB, SMF, inivisionpower (w.e).
