Default Man.Utd close in on Tevez

    source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk

CARLOS Tevez will sign for Manchester United next week in a deal expected to be worth around £20million.

The Reds are expected to announce that they have wrapped up a deal to bring the 23-year-old Argentina striker to Old Trafford.

The only stumbling block could be a challenge from West Ham United, who claim to own the player's registration after his season playing for them in the Premiership.
The deal will confirm United as the biggest spenders in world football this summer, taking their outlay past the £70m mark after the captures of Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson.

Tevez, known in Argentina as `Carlitos', has always claimed to be a United fan - he caused a storm while playing for Brazilian club Corinthians by turning up at a press conference wearing a Reds shirt.

United have been tracking Tevez, currently representing his country in the Copa America in Venezuela, since last summer, as exclusively revealed by M.E.N. Sport at the time.

There was talk last summer that his move to West Ham, along with international teammate Javier Mascherano, was simply a `marking time' move before he signed for either Chelsea or United.

West Ham claim to own his registration, although the rights to Tevez are still owned by shadowy London-based organisation Media Sports Investments (MSI).

M.E.N. Sport understands that West Ham were the only club willing to accept MSI's terms when they shocked world football by signing Tevez and Mascherano - now at Liverpool - last summer.

United have insisted that they must fully own the rights to Tevez to effect the deal, but still face opposition from the Hammers as they cling to the fact that they hold his registration.

The Reds need to be certain to avoid the kind of controversy which came close to costing West Ham their Premier League place after it was discovered that the transfer had broken league rules in signing the Argentine pair.

In the end, the Hammers were lucky to escape with a record £5.5m fine for the transgression.

All seems very complicated, but I think he would be a brilliant buy.

Man Utd close in on striker Tevez

Tevez played a big part in keeping West Ham in the Premiership last season
West Ham striker Carlos Tevez is set to join Manchester United, according to BBC Radio Five Live Sport.
BBC sports editor Mihir Bose understands talks are underway and says Tevez may move on loan or permanently.

Tevez, 23, is on international duty with Argentina playing in the Copa America in Venezuela.

West Ham have said they want to keep him after he helped them survive in the Premier League last season but doubts have remained over his Hammers future.

"I understand talks have been going on for several weeks now," said BBC sports editor Mihir Bose.

"Manchester United are certainly very keen on Carlos Tevez but they are very complicated talks because of the nature of the loan arrangement he has at West Ham.

"What is going on is whether he goes on a permanent move, which would involve a very high fee. Certainly, Tevez's people would want in the region of what Zinedine Zidane went for when he moved to Real Madrid - about £40m.

"Or he could go on the same arrangement his colleague Javier Mascherano went to Liverpool under from West Ham. That was a two-year deal and a sort of extended loan for a much lower fee."

Tevez was at the heart of the controversy surrounding his signing and that of fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano by the Upton Park club last summer.

West Ham were fined £5.5m for irregularities centering upon who owned the players' contracts.

Tevez brushed aside the problems to inspire the Hammers to an end of season run of form which helped them move out of the bottom three and secure their top-flight status.

Man Utd coach Ferguson has had a busy summer in the transfer market

He had found games hard to come by under former West Ham boss Alan Pardew after his signing but took on a more prominent role after Alan Curbishley took the helm in December 2006.

Tevez scored seven goals in his final 10 Premier League games last season, including the winner at Manchester United which guaranteed West Ham's survival.

He was expected to delay a decision over his future until after the Copa America finishes on 14 July but United appear to be keen to tie up a deal for the player.

Arsenal and Liverpool were also linked with Tevez, who turned down a move to Italian side Inter Milan after failing to meet a deadline they set for him to make a decision about whether to join them.

If Tevez did sign, he would join United's other summer recruits in England midfielder Owen Hargreaves, Portugal winger Nani, Brazilian midfielder Anderson and keeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

    Henry - 30 year old
    Tevez - 23 year old

Tevez is a brilliant player atm, and has lots of time to improve not even in his prime yet, were as Henry has passed or very little prime left imo!

Good buy but where could he go? Manchester already have brilliant strikers, better defenders would be better.

    He'd partner rooney?

And I'm sure Utd have a few defenders lined up.. with Heinze & Silvestre reported to be heading for the exit doors.

    We shall see..
