Whats a block?

In america you guys have a block?
Ive seen people say it all the time like 'i ran ten blocks'
So i was wondering how big is it?
Is it like a mile or what?:S

like you know the roads are straight
they have like boxes of houses where the roads are
thats a block.

It's pretty much been said, when you cross the road you cross over to another block, which is a block or box of houses/buildings whatever so that if you want to the other side they'd probably be more houses/buildings and each of those is a block.

Im english and basicly it means walk the full way round the street.
