Why is it Http 404? Why the 404?

You know when there is a missing link it's http 404
I was wondering this this morning, why is it 404 i dont geddit, can anyone shed some light into why it is this number and not any other number?

In the code 404, the first "4" indicates a client error, such as a mistyped URL. The following two digits indicate the specific error encountered.

They should really just say "Error; you mistyped the address" to solve people thinking the internet hates them.
