    Default Layout...

    Hi all,

This is a thread for both comments and questions.

Knocked this up with the inspiration from a tutorial on the interwebs:

    http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2025/layoutlz6.png

Yes, it's simple, but it's simple I want. I've coded most of it, except for the shadowing on the left and right of the content box. How should I do that? I can't see any other way short of slicing the entire content box, but then it'll be tricky making it expandable...

So, feedback on layout would be lovely, and if you've got a suggestion for coding the box, I'm all ears!

It's okay, but you need to smooth the text out, it looks kinda bad like that. (Anti-Alias?)
i've been here for over 8 years and i don't know why

Yeah, I was wondering why it was doing that. I'll have a look at the anti-alias settings now

And why did you have to c+p that dreamweaver stuff onto there?
^_^ Or, did you download the source file & edit the title

You mean the dummy text? Just googled for it, testing what a page looked like when it had text all over it.

Image has been anti-aliased, looks much better, thanks for the tip H!

The problem with these sorts of layouts is the content bit.
I mean, have a close look at it.

Your header/navigation bit is quite interresting but as you go down, its nothing but plain text on a white background.

Don't get me wrong though, you could make something nice out of this,
here's some stuff you could do :

    • Use some more color in the navigation bit, doesn't have to be a different color, but try adding things like a (same as title)-blue colored squares/blocks nexto each nav-word. Do you get what I mean ?
    • Play with the background color a bit... I'd try either a dark gray or a light, very light gray.
    • For the content bit: maybe you could make the big text smaller in width, and add new features on the right such as "latest creation" or "lates news & updates" .
    • In this case of layout, I would give the titles, in this case :"Welcome" a different color then your main text.
    • Add a footer, If this was my layout, I would add a footer, being a black bar with the lighter glow on the top half (same style as navigation background) but only as wide as the content text is now. So you place the bar underneith your text. In the footer you could have things like Copyright , small links to home/about/portfolio and a "back to top" link etc.

Anyway these are just some ideas going trough my mind atm
    Good luck with it.

    Regards,
    Olivier P.

Boring. Content part is even more boring. Header is foolish.

Ah! Great idea, thanks! I'll play around with that today.

Yeah, wasn't sure about the orange actually. I'll keep that in mind :

Mmm, agreed. I'll see what I come up with the background.

Yeah, I did exactly the same thing as you've suggested with it, and it looked a little stupid. I'll try again, and see what I come up with.

What does everyone think about the shadowing on the content area? Is there any way I can have the shaddowed bits included, without slicing the entire content area or using tables?
