Failing to connect to live?

Ok, well i got my xbox and free month of live and i have my network adaptor i connect into the back of my tower and the other end into my xbox, it fails to pick up my IP.

Any solutions around this

Open the disk drive so all the menu's popup go to connection, test them see what you need go on your comp ip config it gives u it all,

go on run on the start up menu then type in cmd hit return then you will see a black box type in ipconfig and hit return it will show your ip address an your mask gateway go on connections and type this in where you need it.

Any more help, i put my ip and subnet mask and gateway in manuely and still wont pick up my ip please help!

the ethernet cable wont fit into my modem so its in the back of my tower so i dunno if its that thats stopping it work
