Either your .htaccess file is denying permission or the files aren't chmod'ed properly. Make sure you are giving the server read permission for the files.

Would it affect it if there was no/an empty .htaccess? and whats the default chmod for read cheers

edit: images are on 644. I don't have a .htaccess in images folder, but could it be the main .htaccess restricting?

Try deleting everything in you .htaccess and then open the images directory and make sure there is no .htaccess in there either.
