Thumbs down Government denies the British people a vote on the EU

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7277644.stm

MPs have rejected proposals to hold a UK-wide referendum on whether to ratify the EU's Lisbon Treaty.

The House of Commons turned down the Conservative proposal by 311 votes to 248 - a margin of 63.
The result means Parliament itself will decide whether to ratify the treaty, signed by EU leaders last December.
Thirteen Lib Dem MPs rebelled against the party's orders to abstain on the referendum vote, with three frontbench spokesmen resigning their posts. MPs rejected the Conservative amendment to the EU (Amendment) Bill, but 29 Labour MPs supported it. Three Tories defied their party leadership.
Labour voted against a referendum, Conservatives voted for a Referendum, majority of Liberal Democrats refused to vote but some resigned and voted.

Another broken promise from this Government, we fought in WW2 to control ourselves and now it's going to be controlled by the EU.

How ridiculous, the most powerful country that isn't even a part of that ****** continent has to be controlled by those people.

Parliament is the last chance to stop the brussels gravy train, hopefully enough Labour MP's will stand against the Government and vote for what the people want.

Even with 29 Labour rebels it wasnt enough. Not nearly. A shame but they put it to vote and it didn't win. I can't really say I know enough about the EU to comment on my views but we're an island and we coped for ourselves pretty well before and I'm sure we will do just fine now.

And 'Taker, loving the signature. Its fantastically over the top.

I don't see how we're actually a democracy? All three parties PROMISED in the 2005 elections in their manifesto to do a referendum on any new constitutions. However hardly any of these cheating politicians have stuck to their word. Some idiot Tories rebelled and what the hell where the Lib Dems doing? Just what the hell... I've seriously gone off that Nick Clegg now, this was his and the Tories little chance to get a referendum, but he tells his party to boycott, in other words kissing it up against the wall.

And Labour, it's pretty expected but I fail to see how this country is a democracy any more, all these fibbing and corrupt politicians, the system just isn't working...

Edit: Sadly my idiot of a Labour MP didn't bother to rebel, I never expected anything decent from her anyway...

Nice one, what did he say? I can't recall ever meeting my MP, however I do know my Perspective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for the Tories rather well, in fact I'm going to her wedding
