I got an old machine to do whatever I want to. I did have Linux on it but I couldn't really understand how i could connect to it via my mac, i tried many ways but didn't seem to work. Anyone got any ideas on what i could do with it and so on?

    Thanks.

What are you trying to do by connecting it? Did you use the crossover cable?

Alternatively you could set up Small business server or something just to mess about with and get to know

What i mean by connecting is, where i can connect to it and access the files on my mac, without the pc being on a monitor. So i just switch it on, connect via mac and its all there. If you get me?

Yeh so you can search the files on it, you use a crossover cable to do that..http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136191

if its got a large harddrive/you have an external/money for either you could use it as a kind of media centre. frees up space on your mac mini and its also one less program you're using on it.

Plug a montior in for like 10 minutes and do what I did, enable File & Printer sharing, install a webserver and a VNC server, then make it visible on mac, and remove the monitor!
