Default Flags on front of houses.

This morning, I woke up to find a nice England flag waving loud and proud on the next door neighbour's front wall. To go with their nice, faded Christmas lanterns they've had up since Christmas 2004.

They seem to have arrived at our row of houses straight from a council estate, because they have England flags and 365 day Christmas lights. They seem to be in a lot of debt and can't afford to live here. The pole isn't very sturdy, so with a bit of luck it might blow off the house tonight and the next door but one neighbours will find it in their car window.

Why? We don't mind the next door but one neighbours, but they're having an ongoing row with them. They have a nice new car, too, which could put them out of a lot of money, and possibly finish them off and get them out of the house. They argue, watch football and cheer loudly, play their dance music at full blast, shout at the neighbours out of the window (and I quote "Why are you doing work? It's bloody 10 O'Clock on a Sunday morning").

Before these moved in, we had the "Tango Strange" woman and her husband (who were quiet at least).

I seemed to offend my friend when I brought the flag issue up, and he asked why aren't people allowed to love their country for St George's day. Looking at the state of the Christmas lights, I'm not sure it's going to come down until it's blown down.

What do you think of flags on the front of houses?

I don't do it myself but nothing wrong with being proud of your country.

I considered putting a flag up in my room but i changed my mind when i thought people would think i was just supporting a football team when i'm not even a fan of the sport!

We used to have an Irish flag in out back garden, but we took it down (no reason) but we didn't get any comments or abuse for it, so I support it no matter what country it is

I have an Irish and Australian flag in my room (australian cause we have aussie relatives and I want to move there when I'm older) but no union jack, don't know why lol

And in both northern ireland and the republic there's lots of flags outside houses and public buildings.

There is nothing wrong with being proud of your country, but a flag on the front of your house, 24/7 I feel is a bit OTT and generally... scummy.

It's not even like it's the World Cup (or we're in Euro 08), and I doubt they even know what St. George's day is. The last bit might be an assumption, but it's not something people outside council estates generally do.

EDIT: Paddy mentioned public buildings. It's the norm for public buildings to have flags outside them, but houses? I don't get it.

Unfortunately, in England (not sure about Scotland or Wales), it's not the same. They're usually promotional flags from the Sun from the 1998 World Cup, or something.
