Default Mosley wins vote of confidence

    Taken Directly from www.Itv.com/F1

Max Mosley has won the crucial vote of confidence at the FIA general assembly meeting in Paris.

The FIA president's future had been in the balance after the News of the World published a lurid expose about his private life in March, and he had called the vote following demands for his resignation.

But today in Paris the assembly, which is comprised of automobile clubs from around the world, voted to support Mosley by a clear majority of 103 to 55.

Seven members abstained, and four votes were invalid.

Mosley had insisted that his private activities had no bearing on his position as FIA president, and had refused to step down, although he has previously indicated that he would not seek re-election when his term ends in October 2009.

Several of the world's largest automotive clubs had led the criticism of Mosley, including the American and German bodies.

Amid speculation that a breakaway body could be established, the German organisation the ADAC has announced that it will suspend its FIA activities.

The FIA is the governing body of world motorsport, and is also responsible for safety policy in the wider automobile world.

Mosley has suggested that he would be willing to take a lesser public role in the wake of the scandal and to focus instead on the behind-the-scenes discussions on F1's future governance that are currently taking place.
