It's free if your xbox is still covered by your warranty. If it isn't it'd be like 70 quid.
And yeah, you have to send it away.

They send you a box to sent it off in, its all free.

I called them up the other day becuase mine rrod'd to,
everyones warranty has been extended by three yearsUsed to be GraysAthChaz
